When looking online for a change management definition, you’re likely to encounter two different definitions to this search. One relates to business (and is most likely why you’re here), while the other is a computing and engineering term.
For the moment, let’s go over both definitions. I’ll get the computer and engineering one out of the way first, since it’s the simpler and more brief of the two.
#1 – Change Management as a Computing and Engineering Concept
In computing and engineering, change management is a research and development tool, as well as a testing procedure. Change management software identifies necessary changes that must be made to hardware or software – either by symptoms, features or efficiency improvements, and remedies it.
The software facilitates solutions and any other auxiliary adjustments that must be made within the system. Change management software ensures that changes work properly. It ensures that your system does not become unstable or develop problems.
The business definition entails some similar concepts, but it goes further, and is a bit less of a hard science.
#2 – Change Management as a Business Concept
The business definition of change management involves the development, organization, implementation and restructuring of an organization or social structure.
Change management includes downsizing, changes in procedure, changes in regulations, merging or division of departments, creation of new departments, and everything related to product management. Change management also involves employee training.
Change management, in business, requires not only the proper pacing and implementation of changes, but managing this implementation without disrupting existing business processes. The output of your business should not be affected or diminished in any way.
This requires a lot of patience, strategy and multitasking, and often results in extra work loads, as employees are taken offline in order for changes to be implemented.
A good change management professional can shift workloads and flows around in a way that doesn’t stress individuals or departments. They also have a skill for implementing these changes on schedule.
